The Road Less Traveled

Everyone loves an underdog story, but when you're the underdog, the narrative is a little less glamorous. For me, two driving forces have shaped my path in sports: my family and an unexpected curveball from life—an ACL injury during my junior year.

First and foremost, my family is my rock. The values instilled in me from a young age, from discipline to hard work, have served as my North Star throughout this athletic journey. My ultimate goal is to make them proud, to let them know their sacrifices and unwavering support didn't go in vain. But like any athlete will tell you, the path is never smooth, and during my junior year of high school, I hit a significant obstacle.

Tearing my ACL was more than just a physical setback. It shattered the sense of invincibility that often accompanies youth and athleticism. But it was during that challenging time that my motivations crystallized. I recognized my vulnerability, the impermanence of any career in sports, and I saw a new kind of strength emerge—one that would not have been possible without that adversity. The injury lit a fire within me, solidifying my resolve to reach new heights in the sport I love.

So, when it came time to make one of the most crucial decisions of my young life—choosing a college—I weighed my options carefully. The offers were flowing in, and among them were tempting opportunities to join SEC schools, a conference known for its football prowess. But the decision wasn't as difficult as many would assume. I chose to stay home and play for Maryland. It wasn't just about geography; it was about community, legacy, and a deep-rooted connection to the place that made me who I am today.

Choosing Maryland was about being close to my family, the people who had been there during my lowest lows, cheering me on as I took those first painful steps in my post-injury recovery. It was about giving back to a community that had given me so much and showing other local athletes that you don't have to leave home to play great football or to find success.

The road less traveled often comes with its share of bumps and detours, but I wouldn't have it any other way. It's made all the difference in shaping me as an athlete and as a person, reaffirming that sometimes the most extraordinary journeys begin right in your own backyard.

The Student in Student-Athlete
Being a college athlete is a full-time commitment, but let's not forget the first word in the term "student-athlete": student. It's not a title to be taken lightly. While the gridiron might be where I unleash my physical skills, the classroom is where I sharpen my mental tools. Balancing the two isn't just a requirement; it's an art form.

The key to this delicate equilibrium? Prioritization and time management. The university provides academic time slots—precious hours carved out for athletes to focus on their studies. I use this time religiously, making sure that I handle my academic responsibilities before I step onto the field. This allows me to fully commit to practice, knowing that I've already taken care of business in the classroom.

My strategy might seem simple, but it's effective: Use every academic minute wisely. There's no room for procrastination. I tend to tackle the most challenging assignments first, knowing full well that my energy and focus will be compromised after an intense training session or game. In this sense, it's all about being proactive rather than reactive. I never want academics to be a source of stress that affects my performance in sports, and vice versa. Each deserves its own space, free from the worries of the other.

To streamline my academic efforts, I also utilize all the resources at my disposal. The University of Maryland offers a variety of academic services for athletes, from tutors to study halls to workshops. These resources are invaluable, not only for understanding course material but also for learning how to study effectively. It's one thing to put in the time; it's another to use it efficiently.

My academic ambitions don't stop at a bachelor's degree. I have plans to pursue a master's in kinesiology and eventually launch my own sports physical therapy business. These long-term goals serve as a constant reminder of why academics matter, providing an extra layer of motivation when I'm juggling coursework, practice, and games. Being a student-athlete is about mastering the duality that the title implies. It's about excelling in the classroom as much as on the field, creating a harmonious balance that allows me to thrive in both realms. As I navigate this challenging but rewarding path, I carry with me the determination to succeed and the discipline to make it happen.

The Heroes I Look Up To
When it comes to role models, the list could be endless with countless professional athletes who have perfected their craft. However, no one has inspired me more profoundly than my own mother. I’ve always seen her as a superhero. From my childhood to now, she has set the bar high, teaching me lessons of resilience, humility, and hard work—lessons I take onto the field every time I suit up. She's my silent strength, the fuel to my fire, and a living testament to what perseverance can achieve.

As for professional athletes, I admire a number of them for their skills, ethics, and contributions to the sport. These football greats—each with their own unique style, their own journey—show me the various paths to success. They remind me that there's no singular route to greatness; instead, it's a complex tapestry woven from diverse experiences and challenges. Studying them has become something of a pastime for me, a way to constantly learn and adapt.

The Neeo Avery Edge
Every athlete brings something unique to the table, but what sets me apart is an uncommon blend of size, speed, and agility. I’ve always felt that there aren't many people my size who can move the way I move. My training has always been more than just improving physical strength; it's about honing my agility, enhancing my quickness off the snap, and polishing my technique until it's second nature. But more than physical attributes, what truly sets me apart is my mentality. I abide by a straightforward principle: I will not be outworked. It's an ethos that I bring into every practice, every game, and even every academic endeavor. No matter how talented the competition, they will not out-hustle me. That's a promise.

Values Over Victory
Perhaps the most critical element of my approach to sports and life is a commitment to personal values. At the top of that list is humility. I've seen firsthand how arrogance can bring a player down. Once an athlete gets caught up in their own hype, they lose that hunger, that edge, which often leads to decline. I keep my head down, letting my actions speak for themselves.

But why humility? Because it keeps me grounded and allows me to appreciate every win and learn from every loss. It reminds me that no matter how many accolades I gather or tackles I make, there's always room for improvement, always an opportunity to be better. This humility extends to my academics as well. Success in the classroom doesn't make me complacent; instead, it fuels my appetite for knowledge and my resolve to excel in every realm of life.

My personal values—humility chief among them—inform everything I do, from the classroom to the gridiron. They shape my interactions with teammates, coaches, and even opponents. And as I navigate the rigors and rewards of being a student-athlete, these values act as my guiding light, ensuring that while I might be chasing victory, I'm also building a legacy that's rooted in character.

A Place to Unwind
Despite the hustle and bustle of student-athlete life, we all need a sanctuary, a place where we can escape, even if only for a few moments. For me, that sanctuary is the mall right in the middle of the University of Maryland campus. It's a sprawling open space framed by trees and academic buildings, a sort of tranquil island amid the ocean of constant activity and pressure. Here, I can just be Neeo, not the 4-star edge rusher everyone knows, but just another student looking for some peace of mind.

Walking through the mall allows me to disconnect, to momentarily shed the weight of expectations and responsibilities. It gives me a chance to be present, to feel the ground beneath my feet and the sky above my head—no playbooks, no game films, just the unfiltered experience of the here and now. It's here that I gain perspective, reminding myself that while football is a significant part of my life, it isn't the sum total of my identity.

Life Off the Field
When I'm not chasing quarterbacks or hitting the books, you'll likely find me outdoors, immersed in the natural world. Nature has always been my secondary passion; it’s a different kind of playground, one that comes with its own set of thrills and lessons. Whether it's hiking trails, camping, or simply sitting by a body of water contemplating life’s complexities, nature provides a reprieve from the relentless rhythm of academia and athletics.

These activities may seem far removed from the gridiron, but they serve a crucial role. They act as a mental reset, helping me maintain a healthy balance between my obligations and my well-being. Nature teaches patience, resilience, and the power of adaptability—all qualities that I find invaluable both on the field and in the classroom.

Aligning with Brands
In this modern era of collegiate sports, NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) opportunities offer student-athletes like me a platform to not only build a brand but to align with existing ones. While I'm still exploring what specific brands resonate with my persona and aspirations, the potential is electrifying. Whether it's sportswear companies that prioritize sustainability (a nod to my love for nature) or educational platforms that could leverage my commitment to academics, the possibilities are endless.

What I'm looking for are brand partnerships that go beyond the transactional. I want to collaborate with companies that share my values—hard work, humility, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. As I take the next steps in both my athletic and academic careers, aligning with the right brands could serve as another layer of the foundation upon which I intend to build my future. And just like choosing to play for Maryland, I intend to choose carefully, knowing that the right partnership can have a far-reaching impact, well beyond my time as a student-athlete.

Pre-Game Rituals
Every athlete has their own unique set of pre-game rituals; these aren't just superstitions but methodologies designed to prepare the mind and body for the task ahead. For me, it’s all about getting into a specific mindset, a sort of controlled aggression mixed with calm focus. Music plays a big part in that. My playlist is a throwback to old-school hip-hop and R&B—genres that, to me, represent an era of raw authenticity and soul. It's not just about pumping myself up but grounding myself, reminding me of the roots from which I come and the dreams towards which I'm striving.

A Look Into the Future
As I set my eyes on the upcoming season, I have set for myself a dual focus: athletic and academic. Athletically, my goal is to be named Freshman Big Ten All-American. It's ambitious, but achievable, and sets the stage for the kind of career I want to have at Maryland. On the academic front, I plan to continue prioritizing my studies, capitalizing on the academic time I’m allotted to ensure that nothing hinders my performance on the field.

The Influence of NIL and Terpicenter
The new NIL policies are revolutionizing the landscape for college athletes, offering opportunities that were inconceivable just a few years ago. The Terpicenter platform takes this a step further, providing cutting-edge technology to help student-athletes like me build our brands. With its tools, I can showcase who I am beyond my stats, connecting with fans and sponsors that share my values. As someone who wants to create his own value, this is an incredible asset, enabling me to manage and grow my personal brand effectively.
